Amount of Engines on a Boat

I have a 26-foot boat that I am considering adding another engine too. I just have one now. What is the main reason to add another motor to your boat? (going fast, more hp, etc). Personally, I just want a little more speed to it. Bring on your opinions!

  • If you are using your boat at sea, there is another good reason for multiple engines: safety. If one engine goes out you can limp back home on the other. Of course, running multiple engines increases your fuel and maintenance costs.

  • You need to consider the HP rating of your boat/transom as well. Was your boat designed for twin outboards? (I'm making an assuption); Just cause you can doesn't mean you should. Previous comment is absolutely the best reason for twins.
