I will be installing a windlass this fall and I am looking for any and all advice or information I can get my hands on as I have never done a project like this before. Thank you Dock Line members for your help in advance!
Are you installing a horizontal or vertical windlass? How big are you talking?
Installing a windlass is a great upgrade that your lower back is going to thank you for! Your first step is to take a measurement of your chain locker and how much fall you have. You will also need to decide on your anchor rode which determines the gypsy of the windlass. I recommend you read through this quick West Marine tutorial on selecting a windlass. Once you have a windlass selected, I can help walk you through the installation process.
@SailingFree Consider using Coosa board and fiberglass to build yourself a mounting platform. You will strengthen the deck and give yourself a better foundation to start working from when installing a new windlass.
@SailingFree Here is a wonderful video on installing a Lewmar V700 vertical windlass (they accidentally say horizontal in the video). They cover creating the shelf for the windlass and how to glass it in with enough reinforcement to hold the anchor rode. From there they go over wiring and installing the controls. When you break it down into steps, it isnt as intimidating. They install switches near the wheel as well as up on the bow so you can operate it from both positions. I thought that was a pretty cool idea.
